Did my annual or bi-annual pit/brush fire yesterday. A cool day. I had a nice North east wind that kept the fire going and  me warm at the other end. Burned most of the brush Lu and I cut last week from winter damage and 4 burnished stoneware pots. Not a very large fire but it's still hot. Pots were crusted with ash salt and metals from the firing. Careful scraping, cleaning and a final wax shows more subtle, earthy pots this year. Have a great day!

New brushes. A collaboration with Artist and carver Ted Parker.
Handles carved in deer antler by Ted. Brushes composed and built by me. The tips are white and black American Elk (Moose) set in antique birch ferules.

Did a Raku firing the other day 3 horse hair pieces sprayed with ferric chloride while still hot.
This piece was Raku fired with horse hair and turkey feathers. It was sprayed with Ferric chloride while still very hot. This piece was fired several times. the first two as black and white smoke pieces. the last as a horse hair piece. This time it sustained several almost invisible fractures that were reenforced with brass rivets.

I am in the process of completing some burnished pieces for an upcoming sagger and pit firing.. This is a favorite stage in the process. Complete, burnished and drying leather hard.
